Children at a primary school took part in an art competition before one design was chosen to help commemorate the centenary of World War One.

Key Stage two pupils at Lanchester Community Free School, in Hempstead Road, Watford, were invited to come up with a big and bold design featuring poppies which has been displayed in the school’s lobby.

The winning design was by Zosia Kozial, 7, who created a drawing of two poppies with faces. Her design was then matched by principal at the school, John Dibdin, who used waste wood and plastic bottle tops to construct an impressive model which mirrors Zosia’s picture.

Zosia Kozial's winning entry

At 11am on Friday, the model was brought out into the school playground as pupils observed a one minute silence to remember all those who have died at war protecting our country.

Mr Dibdin said: “We wanted to create something special to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War One. There were lots of fantastic entries, but the winner was this beautiful, emotional design by Zosia Koziol.

"I chose it because it was so original and was really moving. It really engages with the tragic nature of that terrible war, while maintaining a proper level of respect for all those young men and women who were affected.”
