Police have confirmed that the driver of a vehicle which crashed into a stationary lorry has died.

A Toyota Hilux crashed into the back of a lorry which was in a layby on the A1 northbound between Borehamwood and South Mimms at around 10.10am this morning.

The A1 is shut northbound between Stirling Corner and the M25 for investigation work.

Several fire engines, ambulances, and an air ambulance attended the scene.

The victim’s family have been made aware and are being supported by specially trained officers, Hertfordshire Constabulary has confirmed.

The lorry driver did not sustain any injuries.

Road policing officers are appealing for witnesses.

Sergeant Samuel Cordingley from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit said: “We are working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding this collision and I would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken to police.

“If you have a dash cam fitted in your vehicle and believe you may have footage that could assist our investigation please also contact me as soon as possible.”

An East of England ambulance spokeswoman confirmed: “We were called at 10.17am today to reports of a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A1 northbound, near South Mimms.

“Two rapid response vehicles, two ambulance officers, an ambulance crew, and the air ambulance from London Air Ambulance were sent to the scene to help.”

Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue confirmed it sent crews from Borehamwood, St Albans, as well as a rescue support unit.

There are no details of when the A1 will be opened again and delays are building on routes out of Borehamwood and Elstree towards Stirling Corner, including the A411.
