As an ardent Brexiteer and long time Conservative Party member, I find myself totally in disagreement with Watford MP Richard Harrington (‘Parties divided over May’s Brexit deal’, Watford Observer, November 23).

The deal Mrs May has returned with from Brussels is nothing short of a sell-out. We will remain in the Customs Union indefinitely and perhaps permanently to give effect to the Irish backstop conditions, which are redundant since no one wants a ‘hard border’. We can never withdraw unilaterally but have to obtain EU consent and European Court of Justice arbitration.

France is now going to take objection to our fishing rights and problems with Gibraltar’s status in future negotiations are fully apparent.

Fortunately, the Withdrawal Agreement is likely to be thrown out in Parliament. We can then leave the EU without agreement and trade under World Trade Organisation rules where 132 countries partake of reasonable tariff conditions.
