Four-way traffic lights caused absolute gridlock across Watford this morning.

Drivers were stuck in queues from as far away as Kings Langley due to temporary lights in Rickmansworth Road at the junction of Hagden Lane.

More frustratingly for drivers, the works by UK Power Networks are taking place on the pavement and not on the road but barriers have blocked one side which means vehicles heading towards Croxley Green are forced onto the other side.

Watford Observer:

The barriers have created a temporary footpath.

UK Power Networks say a lane closure is in place to allow pedestrians to "use the road safely through a temporary crossing".

This is despite the junction, which is currently out of order, having pedestrian crossing facilities.

No one was working at the scene during this morning’s rush hour.

The lights will be manually controlled between 6am and 8pm.

Traffic was at a crawl in the town centre, along Rickmansworth Road from both the town centre and Croxley Green, as well as along Hempstead Road all the way from the A41 at Hunton Bridge.

Watford Observer:

Traffic has eased for now but delays are inevitable during the afternoon and evening rush hour - and could run until next Wednesday.

The works are "essential and immediate" to ensure "safe and reliable power supplies", according to UK Power Networks.

Watford Observer:

The works are on the corner of Rickmansworth Road and Hagden Lane

A spokesman for UK Power Networks said: "Engineers are working as quickly and safely as possible to repair an underground cable which powers the local area.

"Traffic lights and a lane closure are in place so that pedestrians can continue to use the road safely through a temporary crossing. We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

"We have a permit to complete this essential work by Wednesday 16 January, but aim to finish this week if at all possible."
