Emergency service people were in large number yesterday at the scene of a two-car crash outside a leisure centre in which a woman was "trapped".

Police and Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue teams cordoned off an area outside the Everyone Active Watford Leisure Centre Central facility on Peace Prospect, after a collision involving two vehicles at around 1.30pm.

Hertfordshire Constabulary said today a female motorist had become trapped in one of the vehicles.

A metallic stone-coloured Ford Fiesta and silver Mercedes were facing opposite directions, each with body damage.

Police cars, an ambulance and two fire engines were present. Several fire servicemen were seen gathered around the silver Mercedes which had driven straight into the wall outside the leisure centre leading to the main door.

The Fiesta was angled on a kerb facing away from the Mercedes with a crumpled driver’s side door.

Metal-cutting machines were seen near the vehicles and a stretcher from the ambulance was positioned beside the Mercedes which had its passenger and boot door open.

Fire extinguishers were also handy.

Traffic cones, police signage and striped tape diverted oncoming traffic away from the scene.

Hertfordshire Constabulary said "slight injuries" were sustained by those involved. 

Both cars were recovered by 3.15pm.
