A section of road that was damaged by construction lorries has not been repaired – despite repeated complaints to Barnet Council.

Local resident Andrew Pebwain says he has urged the council to resurface a damaged section of Green Lane, Edgware, but the road is still in a bad condition after more than a year of complaints from local people.

Mr Pebwain said the stretch of road between Kings Drive and Loch Crescent had been left badly rutted by lorries going to and from the nearby Stonegrove and Spur Road development.

He said: “The road surface is a disgrace. It is so rutted it is unbelievable. Residents have been suffering for years.

“The council does not want to put it right – they don’t want to spend their own money.

“I sent them letters and reminders and wrote to the leader of the council and the chief executive.

“No-one wants to do anything about it. The council accepts it is in a bad condition.”

Barnet Council paid out more than £23,000 after receiving more pothole insurance claims than any other London borough last year, the Federation of Small Businesses recently revealed.

A spokesperson for the council admitted the road was in poor condition and added it had been included in the planned maintenance programme for the current financial year.

They added: “The reason for its poor condition is due to the construction traffic from the Stonegrove and Spur Road regeneration project, as well as construction traffic from neighbouring developments in the local area.

“There are proposals to carry out permanent resurfacing works on this section of road.

“We are currently negotiating a legal agreement with the developer of the Stonegrove and Spur Road regeneration project to fund part of the resurfacing works.

“It is anticipated the legal agreement will be completed by March 2019. Once completed, the resurfacing works will be programmed and carried out.

“In the meantime, we will continue to carry out inspections in response to defects raised by residents and deliver temporary repairs as and when required.”
