A museum and art gallery is on the lookout for volunteers to help keep it alive.

There is concern Bushey Museum, which opened its doors 25 years ago, may not be able to continue to operate unless younger volunteers can be brought in to ensure its survival.

The building is completely volunteer run at the moment. Many of the present team are aged in their 70s and 80s, with some of the volunteers there right from the very start.

Opening its doors in the former Bushey Urban District Council offices, in Rudolph Road, the museum showcases both history and art. It shows history of Bushey from the earliest times with displays of archaeology, artefacts, documents, and historical maps.

The museum was an outcome of the village of Bushey, at the time, housing an artists colony in the late 19th and early 20 century. An art school was run by famed painter, filmmaker, author, and philanthropist Sir Hubert Herkomer, succeeded by student Lucy Kemp-Welch.

The museum, which is free to visit, is on the lookout for volunteers including a treasurer, a shop manager, and a mail order administrator.

The curators would also like additional help in putting together exhibitions.

If you are interested in helping out at the museum, to reduce the risk of it shutting as older volunteers retire, email busmt@busheymuseum.org or call 0208420 4057.

Meanwhile, on Saturday March 23, the museum will be hosting a fundraiser are people are asked to donate unwanted gifts, toys, household items, plants, cakes, jams and other produce, books, amongst other goods.

All money raised will go towards the museum. Donations should be made on the day before (Friday between 2pm and 4pm, on the Saturday before 10am.
