Park users are gearing up to let off steam for the anniversary celebrations of a much loved train.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Watford Miniature Railway in Cassiobury Park, which was originally opened at Easter 1959 with its first engine Maid Marion.

The line, which has been enjoyed by generations of people in Watford, meanders through the park woodland, criss-crossing several lines before returning to the terminus beside the Grand Union Canal.

To mark its anniversary there will be celebrations on its birthday weekend on April 27 and 28 from 1pm to 4pm.

There will be activities for all ages including an unveiling of a special exhibition in the Hub building on the railway’s history with special talks and the launch of a new commemorative book.

Live music and a model rail way will be on display along with stalls and children’s activities. For more information please contact watford@minirail.co.uk or cassiobury@watford.gov.uk.

Southern Miniature Railways and Watford Borough Council is appealing for help collecting old photographs and stories of the railway. Anyone who can help should contact watford@minirail.co.uk or cassiobury@watford.gov.uk.
