Almost two out of three children in Hertfordshire are walking, cycling or scooting to school, according to new figures published by the county council.
The percentage of children travelling to school by “sustainable means” is a new measure of performance to be collated by the council.
The data is based on a survey of 27,000 children – mainly from primary schools.
It was presented to a meeting of the county council’s resources and performance cabinet panel on Friday (May 10).
And it suggests that 63.8 per cent of children walk, cycle, scoot or ‘park and stride’ on their journey to school.
“In line with the Local Transport Plan, work continues to persuade children (and parents) to travel to school by more sustainable means,” says the report to the panel.
The county council intends to make the ‘percentage of school children walking, cycling, scooting or using other sustainable means to travel to school’ a regular indicator of performance.
