Hundreds of green fingered gardeners got to take advantage of a compost giveaway.

Watford Borough Council and Veolia worked in partnership to celebrate International Compost Awareness Week by giving away 10 tonnes of free compost on Saturday May 11 at Wiggenhall Depot.

The Gurung family travelled from Callowland Ward and experienced the event for the first time.

Anjana said “This event has inspired me and my family to recycle more food and garden waste, especially now that we have seen this wonderful compost.

“My son has brought his own shovel today and he is already excited to get home and to start using the compost in the garden. We will be back next year.”

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor said “Thank you to everyone who already uses their green bin to recycle the food and garden waste that we are able to turn into compost.

“When we’re not giving it back to you, it helps new crops grow. Please keep up the good work!”

Watford residents can purchase great value home composting bins delivered direct to their door, order online at www.getcomposting.com or telephone 0844 571 4444. Compost can be used for pot plants, flower beds, vegetable patches and even lawns. For information on what you can place in your green lidded bin, visit https://www.watford.gov.uk/recycling.
