How much damning evidence does it take before the Government act to curb air pollution as it transpires in a report this week that walking, cycling or jogging on or near busy roads can cause visual impairment?
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) involves degradation of the retina, resulting in loss of central vision.
Researchers found exposure to high levels of nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide - both prevalent in vehicle emissions - leads to an increased risk of developing AMD.
Initiatives like the Ultra Low Emission Zone in London, which imply areas of low pollution, aren’t what they seem: they have been contorted and perverted into ‘pay-to-pollute’ places. Tolling vehicles may raise money but it won’t deter them or cut pollution. If it is to have any hope of cleaning the capital’s filthy air, the Government needs to clamp down hard on hefty polluters and git them with instant fines using advanced cameras that detect emissions.
Cycle routes have grown, but where are the maps showing where they are? The labyrinth of quiet ways to enable people (particularly those at risk) to protect themselves by choosing alternative paths needs to be freely available.
