Mr O’Connell, 27, was stabbed to death following a three-car crash in Gammons Lane in Watford last Saturday (August 31) just before 3am.
Aamir Mustafa, 22, of St George’s Road, Watford appeared in the dock in front of a packed public gallery at St Albans Crown Court. Wearing a grey t-shirt and glasses, he confirmed his full name, age and address.
Mohammed (also known as Hamza) Shah, 19, of Hagden Lane, Watford, appeared via video link from Bedford Prison. He was seen wearing a green jumper and also confirmed his full name, age and address.
Judge Michael Kay QC set a plea hearing date for December 3, with a provisional trial date set for February 17.
Both men were remanded in custody.
Floral tributes have been left on a gated fence in Callowland Park, close to where Mr O’Connell was stabbed.
A balloon attached to the fence read "you will be missed" and messages of love were also left.
