Professor Christine Wheeler McNulty impresses one with her encyclopaedic knowledge (CO2 is not a problem, Letters, September 20). She astonishes us with the freedom and facility she has to assure us that “440 million years ago... CO2 was at 1,100 per cent of today’s level”, “The last Ice Age peaked about 18 thousand years ago”, and “90 per cent of geological history that was 4.65 billion years ago, the earth was warmer than it is now”. I presume these time periods are based upon scientific knowledge? The same scientists who she reminds us who “cannot even predict the incidences of hurricanes”.

If Professor McNulty would reflect on the time period of 4.65 billion years, which in her opinion represents only 90 per cent of the geologic history of our Earth she might avoid such foolishness. The figure 4.65 billion years is a nonsense figure, totally meaningless and incapable of verification. As guesswork about the past she is free to make these assumptions, as she is to know there are “social-engineers who have a one-world government as their aim”.

The only rational and intelligent explanation of the earth’s origin is that found in the Bible. The reason for the rejection of the Bible record lies in its ethical and moral implications. These are hostile to the arrogance of the so-called intellectuals. They foolishly imagine that the human mind is the measure of the universe – its not. To quote Professor McNulty, scientific man cannot even predict a hurricane.

The question of how the earth and mankind came into existence is not answered by shoving the question back into billions of years, nor is it answered by a man or woman whose lifespan is usually around 80 years. There is one unavoidable fact that should inform intelligent thinking, nothing comes from nothing. Trying to avoid the implications of this fact by means of speculation scientific or philosophical reason leads to a dead end. Acceptance of the Bible record is faith-based but it is not an escape into unintelligent speculation such as we find in fellows like Richard Dawkins. The biblical story is rational and corresponds to life as we live it on planet Earth.
