Drivers are being warned of potentially chaotic journeys for almost a month due to roadworks.

Merton Road and then Cassio Road, on the edge of the town centre, will be shut to allow Affinity Water to dig up the road.

The water company is carrying out a lead replacement programme.

Merton Road will be closed 24/7 in stages between the junctions of Vicarage Road and Market Street from October 18 to October 26 - this closure means for at least a couple of days, there will be no full access of the gyratory where Vicarage Road, Farraline Road, and Wiggenhall Road meet.

Where The Hornets and Merton Road meets

Vicarage Road traffic from the hospital and stadium will be able to turn left onto Merton Road but will not be able to join Wiggenhall Road, while work is ongoing in Merton Road between The Hornets and Vicarage Road.

Once the work in Merton Road between Vicarage Road and The Hornets has been completed, there will not be access onto Merton Road but drivers should be able to travel into Wiggenhall Road.

This map shows which sections of road will be closed and how it affects drivers. Click on the coloured lines for further details.

It is all dependent on how quickly the sections of road are dug up and then repaired so timeframes could change once the work has begun.

From October 27 to November 15, Cassio Road will be closed in both directions 24/7 between Market Street and Marlborough Road.

Diversion signs will be in place but journeys are likely to be extended by around ten minutes in normal traffic conditions - journeys are likely to be much longer during rush hour.

Hertfordshire County Council is aware of the impact the work could have on the area of Watford and traffic will be closely monitored to ease congestion where possible.
