A railway society has plans to improve an old train station.

The Smallford Station and Alban Way Heritage Society will be holding a meeting this Friday (October 18) for its collaborative project with Oaklands College.

The improvements include placing vintage lampposts, benches, information boards and flowerbeds.

The society also hopes to work with Oaklands College students for the heritage exhibition of the railway line and station.

For the exhibition, the society is working on restoring an old goods van which they could hopefully site near to the station.

Chairman of the society, Jeff Lewis, said: “Where we place the exhibition will need to be negotiated with the district council.

“We hope to permanently store our research and archives inside the van and open it up to the public.

“The whole thing from my perspective is a community project.

"One of the challenges for most voluntary groups is that were old and ageing and its difficult to get young people involved.”
