PLANS have been submitted to build a road to go through the site of Basingstoke Town Football Club’s old ground.

Hampshire County Council has put forward a proposal for a two-way single carriageway link between the Buckland Avenue mini roundabout through the Camrose ground onto the A30 Winchester Road.

It is proposed that the road will go from the mini roundabout through the existing entrance to the old ground before linking up with the Winchester Road carriage way.

This application comes after Basron Developments Ltd, has proposed plans to redevelop the land for residential use as well as a proposed care home.

As well as the new road a cycle track is proposed for eastbound cyclists on the link road from Western Way to the proposed access point into the redevelopment site.

In the planning design statement submitted to the county council it read: “Changes to the Western Way / Buckland Avenue mini-roundabout and the Link Road / Western Way and Link Road / A30 Winchester Road junctions will take place within the existing highway boundary and are therefore classed as permitted development.

“A cycle track is provided in an eastbound direction along the Link Road. This starts just to the north of the mini roundabout in Western Way and would also be accessible to eastbound cyclists using Buckland Avenue and Western Way.

“This route will link into the proposed residential development on the Football Ground site, which will provide a route through to the A30 Winchester Road.”

In the application submitted by Basron Developments Ltd to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, the firm wishes to demolish part of the existing stadium to build 89 new homes.

As well as the 89 new homes, it is believed that a separate application is set to be submitted for a care home on the land as well.

If this proposal for the roads is approved it will form part of the wider redevelopment of Brighton Hill roundabout, which is believed to cost £18.6million.

Councillor Rob Humby, executive member for environment and transport at the county council, said: “These £18.6m improvements will help ease congestion at busy times of day, improve safety and provide people with more opportunities to walk and cycle.

“Good infrastructure is vital to Hampshire’s continued economic prosperity, and these improvements on the A30 have been designed to make day to day travel easier for local residents and commuters."

Following a consultation period the county council found that 33 per of respondents did not agree with the proposed closure of Western Way, however, the majority of respondents were, supportive provided that an alternative route could be made to the A30 via the football ground.
