Plans to redevelop a former police station into nearly 100 flats have been submitted.

The building in Elstree Way, Borehamwood, is currently derelict and was recently targeted by arsonists.

An application has come forward to demolish the building and construct 96 flats, separated into two blocks.

The one, two, and three-bed apartments would be split into one seven-storey and one eight-storey building.

Of the 96 flats, 34 have been set aside for social, affordable, and intermediate rent units, which meets Hertsmere Borough Council's policy that 35 per cent of a development is affordable.

The scheme comes with 23 parking spaces, 122 cycling spaces, and electric charging points.

The reduced number of parking spaces reflects Hertsmere Borough Council's strategy to "enhance air quality within the area by reducing the amount of cars on the road".

Hertfordshire's Police and Crime Commissioner office owns the former police station, although the application has been submitted on behalf of the borough council.

The site is in the Elstree Way corridor - an area identified by the council for new housing and commercial opportunities.

The planning statement says: "The regeneration of this site is critical to enhancing the attractiveness of the area and the gateway to the town centre."

The building is currently boarded up and has been for many years.

On the evening of December 23 last year, firefighters were called to the site after part of the building was set on fire.

Borehamwood Times:

Police later confirmed the cause of the fire was arson.
