Plans are being considered for part of the Aquadrome in Rickmansworth to be used as an open-air cinema.

According to the plans, the dog-free picnic area at the venue would be transformed into a cinema for up to two days every August.

There would be a bar available. And between the main movie features, there may also be performances by local groups.

Organisers from the High Street entertainment venue Watersmeet have already submitted an application for a premises licence to Three Rivers District Council so the event can go ahead.

On Monday (March 23) that application will be considered by a meeting of the council’s licensing sub-committee.

It is believed that this year the plans are for the event to focus on a single day in August, as part of Hertfordshire’s Year of Culture.

But if it were successful, the licence would allow organisers to repeat it over a two-day weekend in future.

According to the application for the premises licence, the gates would open from 10am and the event would close at 10pm.

It also seeks permission to sell alcohol, show films and perform music during this time.

Entry would be determined by the age classification of the films shown. And according to the application family films will be shown during the day.

Objections to the application have been made by four local residents and one councillor. These primarily concern noise the event will generate and possible disruption.

Some have called for a full assessment of the disruption the event would cause to the local community – and say the 10pm finish time is “not appropriate”.

Others highlight the increased traffic and the length of the event, from 10am to 10pm. And they say there could be litter left behind.

There are also concerns expressed about the impact the event could have on the wildlife.

The Three Rivers District Council licensing sub-committee will meet to determine the application on Monday 23 March, at 11am. The meeting is open to members of the public.
