Watford Borough Council has made the decision to close all of its playgrounds to try and limit the spread of coronavirus.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson was asked at a press conference on Sunday whether he would take action to close parks and playgrounds after images emerged of visitors across England disobeying the two metre social distancing advice.

Mr Johnson said he wanted to keep these attraction open because it was important for people's mental and physical wellbeing.

However, in Watford, the council has made a big decision.

Parks and open spaces will remain open but the children's playgrounds and play areas will close.

Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, wrote on Facebook: "It is so important that we do all we can to limit the spread of this virus and save lives. Closing Watford’s playgrounds and play areas is one way we can help limit the spread of coronavirus.

"I am confident people will understand that we have to put the safety of our communities first, particularly our vulnerable residents.

​"Making children keep to the recommended two metre distance in a busy playground or play area is difficult and the play equipment gets used by a large number of small hands.

"Our decision also means we are doing what we can to protect our NHS from coming under intolerable pressure.

"Watford’s parks and open spaces are still open for people to go walking, jogging or cycling but I encourage everyone to be responsible and stay well apart whilst they are enjoying the fresh air and exercise."

A council spokeswoman said the playgrounds will be padlocked and signs will be put in place warning people not to use the equipment.
