A SPECIAL school in Oxfordshire was forced to close - only 48 hours after reopening - over fresh coronavirus fears.

The Fitzwaryn academy in Grove for pupils aged three to 19 shut its doors yesterday after a family was asked to self-isolate through the government's track and trace system.

This comes after the Oxford Mail reported that half of parents across Oxfordshire refused to send their children back to classrooms on Monday when primary schools welcomed more pupils for the first time since March.

A spokesperson for the institution on Denchworth Road said: "As of today at 3.07pm on June 3, 2020, the school does not have any confirmed cases of Covid-19, either staff or pupils or their respective immediate families sharing households.

"We do have one family that have been asked to isolate through the track and trace program, as a purely preventative measure.

"I would emphasise at this stage that no one in that family concerned, are showing any symptoms of Covid.

"As a precaution we have taken the decision to enforce a 48-hour-closure to facilitate an additional proactive deep clean, this is due to the high medical needs of some of our children.

"We will continue to monitor the ongoing situation, however, at this stage we anticipate school to be fully open to our currently agreed pupils from Monday, June 8.”
