Protesters gathered to a park in St Albans last week in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

More than 1000 people protested peacefully at Verulamium Park on Friday (June 12) in solidarity of the movement and against racial injustices and police brutality.

Protests have taken place across the US and around the world after a black man, George Floyd, died in police custody in the US city of Minneapolis.

In Hertfordshire, peaceful demonstrations have already taken place in Watford and Hemel Hempstead.

Councillor Chris White, leader of St Albans City and District Council said: "This was a very well-attended and peaceful protest that brought together people of all ages and backgrounds from across the District.

"I was happy to attend this personally and was impressed by the passion expressed by the speakers as well as the huge efforts to ensure social distancing was maintained.

"This event shows that there is a tremendously strong desire within our community to create a truly fair, equal and just society.

"As a Council, we actively promote diversity and inclusion and will continue to be at the forefront of efforts to confront racism and discrimination whenever it shows itself."
