Across England, there are a total of six big changes taking place today as lockdown regulations are lifted.

The changes include the reopening of shops and outdoor activities, and places of worship – but only for private prayer.

However, safety measures will remain in place too.

Here's a round-up of the key changes:

1. From June 15, anyone using public transport in England will be required to wear a face covering

  • All hospital visitors and outpatients will also need to wear face coverings, and hospital staff must use surgical masks as of June 15.
  • They do not have to be the same masks as those worn by hospital staff and can be made from scarves, bandanas or other fabric items, so long as they cover the mouth and nose.
  • There will be exemptions to the rules for very young children, disabled people and those with breathing difficulties.

2. Secondary schools and colleges in England will start to reopen

  • Schools will be asked to start providing face-to-face support to Year 10 and 12 pupils, as well as 16 to 19-year-old students who are due to take key exams next year, from June 15.
  • However, only a quarter of pupils will be able to attend at any one time in order to limit the risk of transmission.

3. Zoos and safari parks can reopen

  • However, attractions will not be allowed to reopen indoor exhibitions, such as reptile houses, and must ensure amenities including cafes are takeaway only.
  • They will also be required to introduce social distancing measures such as strict limited capacity, one-way routes and increased hand-washing facilities.

4. Non-essential shops can reopen

Business secretary Alok Sharma told a daily press briefing that they will have to comply with social distancing regulations.

He said: "I can confirm that retail outlets which have been required to be closed will be able to open their doors again from Monday, June 15, so long as they comply with the Covid-secure guidelines we published on May 25."

Shops reopening will include:

• Clothes shops

• Shoe shops

• Toy shops

• Furniture shops

• Bookshops

• Electronics

• Tailors

• Auction houses

• Photography studios

• Indoor markets

5. Place of worship can reopen for private prayer

  • Worshippers will be able to 'reflect and pray' while adhering to social-distancing rules.
  • However, worship groups, weddings and other services will still not be permitted and communal prayer will not be permitted until July 4 at the earliest, the government has said.

6. Market places will reopen

  • Markets, that have been closed, will allow stall holders and shoppers to return.
  • However, shoppers will have to abide by social distancing regulations and opening times will be reduced.
