Chigwell Meadows has been closed after an infestation of tree-damaging caterpillar nests were discovered.

Oak Processionary Moth – caterpillars which feed on leaves of several species of oak trees – have been reported by the Grange Farm Centre in Chigwell.

The meadow has been closed for “a few days” while the issue is dealt with.

“Large populations of Oak Processionary Moth can strip whole oak trees bare, leaving them more vulnerable to other pests and diseases, and to other stresses such as drought”, a farm centre spokesperson said.

“Older caterpillars develop tiny hairs containing an irritating protein called thaumetopoein. Contact with the hairs can cause itching skin, rashes, eye irritations, as well as a sore throat and breathing difficulties in people and animals.”

Grange Farm Centre is working with the Forestry Commission and a professional contractor to remove the nests and spray trees affected.

A farm centre spokesperson added: “Sorry for any inconvenience caused but the safety of the public and staff is of the upmost importance, along with the health of our beautiful trees."

“If you do come into contact with the OPM please see a doctor ASAP. If you spot any more caterpillar nests, please report to a member of staff or email info@grangefarmcentre.co.uk”
