An arrest has been made after a police chase led to the discovery of a gun.

Met Police officers pursued a vehicle along the M1 northbound on Wednesday, June 24, around 6.15pm, when a driver failed to stop for police.

The force says the vehicle tried to exit the motorway at junction 5 (Watford), but crashed into a number of other cars as it turned onto the slipway.

When officers searched the vehicle they found a firearm.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police and dangerous driving, possession of a firearm, driving with no insurance and taking without consent.

No injuries were reported following the crash.

A Met Police spokesperson said: "As is routine, the incident has been flagged to the MPS Department of Professional Standards."

The motorway slipway at junction 5 had been closed for several hours following the incident, causing small delays around the area.

Drivers had been diverted to continue travelling towards junction 6 (St Albans) on the M1 and then head south on the A405.

The incident was cleared by 9.15pm.
