St Albans has one of the highest new case rates of coronavirus in England, according to latest figures.

The list of the weekly rate of new cases of Covid-19 for every local authority in England ranks the city and its district at 14th.

The Public Health England figures are based on tests that have been carried out both in laboratories — pillar one of the Government's testing programme — and in the wider community, pillar two.

Leicester is still the most-affected authority in the country.

The rate of new cases in St Albans district in the seven days to July 7 is 19.

The rate is expressed as the new number of new cases per 100,000 population.

With a total district population of nearly 150,000, the data suggests around 28 people living in the district have tested positive for coronavirus in the last week.

The list is based on the latest Public Health England figures updated on July 10 on the Government's coronavirus online dashboard.
