Elton John spends £49,000 a year on gas and electricity at his £6million mansion, a report has revealed.

This makes him the biggest energy spender among Britain's biggest celebrities, according to comparison website Uswitch.

The music legend and former Watford FC chairman, 73, spends 45 times more than most British households on energy bills. The average energy bill in the UK is £1,125 per year.

Sir Elton lives in his eight-bed Windsor mansion - which has a cinema and a swimming pool - with husband David Furnish, 57, and their two sons.

Only the Queen spends more on power bills than the Watford FC fan, according to Uswitch. Buckingham Palace's energy costs amount to £1.13million a year - 23 times more than Sir Elton's mansion.

Third place in the table of top energy spenders is Robbie Williams, whose £17.5million London mansion racks up £33,000 in gas and electricity bills.

This is followed by Jamie Oliver's £32,000 a year energy bills at his £6million Essex mansion.

Other celebrities on the list of top 10 energy spenders are Ed Sheeran, George and Amal Clooney, Wayne and Coleen Rooney, Simon Cowell, David and Victoria Beckham and Lewis Hamilton.

Sarah Broomfield, energy expert at Uswitch.com, said: "If you've ever opened your energy bill and had a shock then spare a thought for poor Sir Elton.

"Thankfully, most of these celebrities don't have to worry about paying the bills, but celebrity or not, there's always a benefit to keeping down the amount of energy you use.

"Sometimes it can be as simple as closing windows, turning off lights when you leave the room, and turning down the thermostat, but for Sir Elton it might be a question of turning down the temperature of his swimming pool.

"Switching tariffs is another great way to keep those utility bills down. If you're on a standard variable tariff, you can save up to £479 a year by switching, so do a search online and compare what deals are out there."
