A DRIVER and passenger had to be cut out of a car after it flipped onto its side in a car park.

The roof of the silver Hyundai was cut off by fire crews following the crash in Littlehampton shortly before 10.30am.

The car was badly damaged in the crash, though fire crews say that it remains a mystery how the vehicle ended up in the precarious position.

Two casualties were tended to by ambulance crews.

The wall of a nearby RNLI Souvenir Shop was also damaged.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We were called to a crash in Surrey Street, Littlehampton, at 10.22am.

"Two fire engines from Littlehampton and a heavy rescue tender from Worthing were sent.

"On arrival, one vehicle had rolled over in the car park and crews used hydraulic rescue equipment and small gear to extricate two casualties, who were taken into the care of South East Coast Ambulance Service.

"Crews left the scene at 11.34am.

"Unfortunately we have no details on how the car rolled onto its side."

A South East Coast Ambulance spokesman confirmed that one person had been taken to hospital following the crash.

He said: "I can confirm we were called shortly before 10.30am today to reports of a collision and an overturned vehicle.

"One ambulance crew attended the scene and one patient has been taken to St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester."

Sussex Police have been contacted for comment.
