PART of an Oxford tile shop will be transformed into an independent pub for real ale lovers.

Oxford City Council has approved plans to change a section of the ground floor in Choice Tiles, in Headington, into a drinking establishment.

It will be run by a Headington resident and serve locally-sourced beers, with mobile phones banned and closing time at 10pm from Monday to Saturday and 9pm on Sunday.

The statement of purpose submitted alongside the application says: “The Tile Shop is intended to function as a small establishment for the sole purpose of enabling people to come together to enjoy a pint of real ale and a chat.

“It is our intention that no music will be played, no mobile telephones are to be used, no Wi-fi will be provided and entry by those over eighteen years of age only will be strictly enforced.

“Our choice to restrict the hours of opening is a display of our intention to attract those people who would just ‘pop in’ for a couple of pints and therefore, not to attract those who wish to go out for a ‘session’.”

Pints will be poured straight from beer barrels racked behind the bar, while non-alcoholic products will be ‘purchased from local shops’.

The Tile Shop will continue to operate in the other part of the Windmill Road store and there will be no changes to the outside of the building.

A resident who lives on Kennett Road, which backs on to the shop, had asked for there to be no seating or access behind the building to avoid disturbing neighbours.
