This fire engine may be more than 80 years old but it is still seeing active service to educate the public and particularly children about how fire fighting used to be.
Roger Middleton got in touch with this picture of the 1937 Leyland Pump-esque fire engine after we asked readers to tell us about the vehicles they own and are proud of for the Watford Observer’s Me & My Motor feature.
Although Roger doesn’t own the fire engine that served at St Albans fire station, he maintains it in his role as curator of the Herts Fire Brigade Museum at Watford fire station.
Asked what the vehicle is mainly used for, Roger said: “To show the public, especially youngsters, how the design, construction and equipment carried on fire engines was very basic in the early days of fighting fires.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Roger revealed his favourite famous vehicle is the sister fire engine to the one he looks after that had a starring role in the 1962 film Go to Blazes.
