Readers have shared their thoughts on the new lockdown restriction due to come into force this week.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced at the weekend that a one month lockdown will start from Thursday (November 5) in an effort to ease infection rates.

Pubs, bars, restaurants and non-essential retail across the nation will close and people will be told to stay at home unless they have a specific reason to leave. But schools, colleges and nurseries will remain open.

MPs will votes on the new measures before they are introduced at 0001 on Thursday, and when they lapse on December 2, the current tier system will be reintroduced.

At a Downing Street press conference, Mr Johnson said: "We know the cost of these restrictions - the impact on jobs and livelihoods, and people's mental health. No-one wants to be imposing these measures."

Our readers have shared their thoughts on the second national lockdown. Here is what they said.

Some comments suggested that the lockdown was a good idea while others called it "pointless" and are upset that they will have "restricted freedom".

Sandra Pierce said she "doesn't blame" the Government for the second lockdown.

She added: "If people had not congregated in large groups when coming out of pubs and had done as they were told and everyone wore masks it may not be happening."

Wendy Reid said that the Government needs to be fair and "give employers time" so they can make arrangements for their staff.

She added: "They need to be fair and give employers time to assess and make arrangements for their staff.

"The bottom line is the virus is spreading and they need to do something to slow it down.

"I don't believe it has been an easy decision for them to make. A lockdown was inevitable."

Paul Tavener welcomes the lockdown as says we need to slow the spread of the virus to "help hospitals cope".

He added: "We need to slow the spread so everyone gets the chance of a hospital bed and a chance to recover."

Kathryn Shorto says that another lockdown won't '"cure" the virus and said the rates will increase once the restrictions ease.

She added: "People need to be sensible and take responsibility for themselves. Look after yourselves, wash your hands, wear your mask where needed.

"There is a bigger picture that needs to be looked at such as people's jobs and businesses being lost and potentially homes if they get into financial trouble.

"We need to learn to live with it as it isn't going away any time soon. I appreciate it is hard for Boris and I don't envy him but they do need to look at the bigger picture."
