Several readers are calling for tougher lockdown restrictions as coronavirus infections remain high.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has stressed that “now is the moment for maximum vigilance” and warned that tougher measures may be needed in the future.

England entered into a third national lockdown last week due to soaring case rates, with the new and more infectious variant of coronavirus continuing to spread.

Despite seven mass coronavirus vaccination centres - including one in Hertfordshire - opening today, Mr Johnson said: “We’re going to keep the rules under constant review.

“Where we have to tighten them, we will."

More than 300 Watford Observer readers responded when asked if they would support tougher restrictions, with some supporting the idea.

Nicola Amy said: “Yes tougher restrictions are needed with the new variant being more transmissible. I’m not classed as a key/critical worker but like many of us, we still have to go to work. I would prefer to stay at home as long as possible to protect the NHS and save lives. With the exceptions of support bubbles for people’s mental health and exercise a FULL Lockdown is needed.”

Daryl Fernando suggested that a curfew is set during the early hours for everyone apart from key workers.

He said: “Yes, have a curfew 10pm-6am no one allowed out unless they're a key worker in between those times

“Ban all international passengers entering the UK (freight drivers are allowed).

“Have the police and if necessary the army on the streets giving out fines for people breaking lockdown rules.”

Sue Parker said: “Definitely tougher. This variant is spreading faster and more people are dying than the very first lockdown.”

Malcolm Till said he would support a full and enforced lockdown until the virus is “destroyed”.

He said: “I would support a full and enforced lockdown for as long as it takes to COMPLETELY destroy the virus for the sake of everyone. If we had done that in the first place we wouldn't be where we are now.”

Hannah Summers added: “The new strain is 50 per cent more transmissible and our current lockdown is softer than the one in March.

“Yes tougher restrictions are needed.

“It should be 1 person per shopping trip unless you require a carer or have children with you.”

However, some people were against enforcing tougher restrictions.

Laurie McHale said: “It doesn't need to be "tougher" it just needs to be done properly and thereafter properly enforced.”

Katy Kott added: “It doesn’t need to be tougher. Everyone just needs to bl**dy follow them. If we all did that it would work. But people don’t therefore virus spreads. The virus doesn’t move. People move the virus! Stop going out unless essential then we can beat this thing.”

Phil Robinson said: “The rules don't need to change. The consequences of breaking them need to be far tougher though.”
