SOUTHEND has constantly evolved over time, but these eye-catching shots show workers building parts of our seaside town close to 100 years ago.

The coastal town boasts the world’s longest pleasure pier, an amusement park – in Adventure Island – which welcomes countless daytrippers and award-winning beaches.

These photographs, all taken during the 1920s, give us an insight into what Southend was like nearly a century ago.

The images show workers building, fixing, checking, putting up scaffolding and road laying across Southend.

Workmen are shown carrying out safety checks on the popular bowl slide ride at the Kursaal, while the groundwork was also laid for the new dodgem track at its amusement park.

It is clear to see Southend has come a long way since the 1920s.
