Prior to Graham Taylor’s golden era at Vicarage Road, only one man had led Watford into the second tier of the Football League in the club’s history.

Ken Furphy moved to Vicarage Road in the 1964/65 season and as a right-back who made more than 500 appearances in his career, he remained in a player-manager role for almost four years.

Having hung up his boots though, he was to guide Watford to the Division Three title in 1969 and into the second tier for the first time in the club’s near 90-year history.

The Stockton-on-Tees-born manager followed that success up the following year by making more history as the first manager to guide the club into an FA Cup semi-final.

Furphy’s time at Vicarage Road ended in 1971 when he took over at Blackburn Rovers, but the late manager's place in Watford history was assured and, thanks to the Watford Treasury, you can scroll through some images of his years in Hertfordshire below, including more emotive colourised images.
