A man was allegedly seen waving an axe in a Watford street earlier this week.

Armed police were called to Whippendell Road on Tuesday evening to reports of a "disturbance".

It was said a man had been seen waving a weapon - described as an axe - and shouting at people inside a passing vehicle.

The call came in to police at around 8.50pm with police units parking up near the junction with Durban Road East.

One man was detained and taken into custody on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and a public order offence.

He has been released on bail while enquiries continue.

There were no reports of any injuries but police are appealing for witnesses.

Detective Constable Amy Tilson, who is investigating, said: "Our enquiries to establish the circumstances around the incident are continuing at this time. We are appealing for anyone who saw what happened, or who may have captured dash cam footage, to please come forward."
