This week, like I am sure many of you, I joined the national act of remembrance to reflect on the past year. This year has been a difficult one for everyone in Watford, with many losing loved ones, their jobs or not being able to see family and friends for long periods of time during lockdown.

But there is one thing we can say for certain and that is that Watford cares. We have seen so many people step up to newfound challenges and look after each other. Equally, the support we have received for the Watford Helps Covid-19 Appeal has been amazing to see and the generosity has allowed us to help numerous local charities continue their fantastic work throughout the pandemic.

We have also seen lots of individuals making waves in their local communities, some of whom have recently been celebrated through the council’s ‘Unsung Hero’ Awards which chairman Cllr Aga Dychton and I have been delivering to some of our community champions.

Thank you to everyone who has taken on new challenges and work over the last year. Our town is so grateful for each and every person who has helped another in some way. The community spirit of Watford was never in doubt, but this past year has reaffirmed that tenfold.

We are also looking at how we continue to have opportunities for remembrance and reflection around the town, as the effects of the last year will be an important part of how our town evolves out of this period.

The year ahead will be focused on how we start the recovery of our town by supporting businesses, focusing on our wellbeing and continuing to lift each other up and support one another. As restrictions start to ease, I look forward to being able to see more of you out and about across the town and returning to some sense of normality.
