Firefighters tackled a large fire at an abandoned building last night.

Several crews from across south west Hertfordshire were called to put out a fire that broke out on the edge of Northwood.

Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue described it as a "large fire" at a derelict building off Sandy Lane.

The fire service tweeted that crews from Watford, Rickmansworth, Garston, and Borehamwood attended using water jets and hosereels to extinguish the flames.

Photos taken by fire district commander Stuart Sanders yesterday evening show a single-storey building engulfed in flames.

He tweeted after the incident: "Watford, Garston Rickmansworth and Borehamwood attended this incident in Northwood last night, derelict building well alight on arrival, good work from the crews prevented the fire spreading to adjoining buildings."

The cause of the fire is not clear.
