Fans of Watford say they are "proud" to support the Hornets after proposals for a new and exclusive European Super League were revealed.

There has been huge condemnation of the proposed new European competition which all of England’s Big Six have signed up.

There are fears English football as we know it could be destroyed if the Super League goes ahead, regardless of whether the six sides stay in the Premier League or not.

Watford hope to seal a place back in the big time but the excitement of top flight football for the rest of time may have been evaporated by this announcement.

Fans from clubs up and down the country, including the 'Big Six' have hit out at the Super League, and Watford supporters are no different.

Many have taken to social media to offer their opinion on the proposal which is threatening to split football in two.

Golden Pages Fanzine tweeted: “The #ESL plans reveal the contempt that the owners of the so-called top-6 have for their fans and the rest of the football community. Proud to be #WatfordFC"

The Do No Scratch Your Eyes Podcast tweeted a picture of Watford fans, along with the caption and hashtags: "Football is a simple game. It's a game for the man on the terraces; it's a game to excite people." Graham Taylor OBE #Boycottsuperleague #esl #watfordfc #NoToSuperLeague #Boycottsuperleague

Jeff Lloyd wrote: "Huge shout out to the ‘Big’ 6 football clubs selling their souls to the #ESL - my 21 year old #liverpoolfc fan is so destroyed by the announcement he’s decided to come back to support the family team #watfordfc - thank you soulless corporate suits. We’re average but we’re real."

Supporter also responded warmly to a tweet from Watford Football Club yesterday which highlighted the work the club has done in the community.

While the club is yet to officially comment on the Super League reports - and they have been asked - they did tweet: "This is what being at the heart of your community is all about", and in particular paid tribute to the doctors and nurses at Watford General Hospital.

Fans quoted the quote with tweets like 'proper club' and 'real club' and 'my club'.

Leigh Johnson said: "Football is for the fans and community. Not bank balances. So proud of my club @WatfordFC" while Neil Park tweeted: "Genuinely moved by this. On a day when 12 clubs have followed the money our club releases this which shows the best in community clubs. #watfordfc #ESL"
