A road junction that has only been in place for six years is to undergo a full safety review after concerns were raised about the number of crashes.

The junction in question is where Wiggenhall Road and Thomas Sawyer Way meet.

It was introduced after a new access route was created to Watford General Hospital.

Central Watford and Oxhey county councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst says he has obtained figures, which show there were ten personal injury accidents at the junction since it opened in 2015.

The data, which runs up to November last year, shows there were three serious accidents, one of which involved a cyclist.

Cllr Giles-Medhurst said: "There have always been concerns about dangerous and illegal U-turns at the junction and the inadequate signage and controls on the U-turns here.

"Assurances that drivers would understand the junction and that signs had been improved and accidents would not occur have not proved to be the case.

"After receiving detailed information on each accident, I demanded a full safety review. Now, an independent safety audit has been agreed at my request and is to be carried out within the next four weeks."

The councillor said he is "grateful" to residents who have also provided details of incidents and near misses, as well as given footage of the "dangerous" junction being misused.

He added: "With the busy and popular Oxhey Activity Park nearby, this review is essential and indeed overdue. It needs to address the illegal turns, find the causes, if any, of this high level of accidents and bring forward solutions."

A detailed report is expected to be presented to Hertfordshire County Council by late May.
