Thirty-two flats have been given the go-ahead in Watford High Street.

The plans will see a mixture of mainly one and two-bed flats created in a building rising to eight storeys.

The site that will be redeveloped was formerly home to The Entertainer toy store and demolition on the original building is in progress already.

Watford Borough Council previously granted permission in February 2019 to build 29 flats at this location but the applicants returned with a revised proposal for 32 flats, along with a ground floor commercial unit.

The proposal was unanimously passed at a council planning committee meeting on Tuesday night.

According to the planning documents, the building, next door to Five Guys, will stand at four storeys facing the High Street, and rise up to eight storeys at the rear facing Wellstones.

There is no parking proposed and none of the 32 flats will be affordable.

However, the applicants have agreed to pay the council a sum of £50,000 which will go towards providing affordable housing provision elsewhere in the borough.

In a statement which was presented to the committee, planning agent Neil Lucas wrote: "The proposed scheme would deliver a high-quality mixed use scheme which makes an efficient use of previously development land comprising 32 residential units, contributing to housing supply and mix and the re-invigoration of a ground floor commercial unit which adds to the vitality of Watford town centre."
