A man who trafficked a young African woman to the UK to work as a nanny and a ‘slave’ has been removed from his council position.

Oluremi Omotoye, 54, was working at the health and wellbeing department of Luton Borough Council from last Monday (June 28) after hiding his human trafficking conviction.

For six years, Mr Omotoye and his wife forced a young woman to work over 60 hours a week at their house at Sherwood Court, High Road, Leavesden.

While being kept at their house, the young woman was abused both verbally and physically, along with being forced to work.

The woman, Dela Logostou, was from Toga and taken to Nigeria before flown into the country.

Mr Omotoye was jailed back in 2016 for two and a half years for being involved in the human trafficking incident.

However judge Jonathan Carroll said the wife was the 'driving force' in the woman being illegally trafficked– and was also responsible for the physical assaults.

Last week, local paper Luton Today published that Mr Omotoye was working at Luton Borough Council as an analyst.

It is understood that he managed to hide his previous conviction, as the role did not require a DBS check.

The council has now revealed that Mr Omotoye was dismissed last Thursday (July 1) after the discovery of the conviction.

A Luton Borough Council spokeswoman said: “The council demands the highest standards of probity from its staff.

“We would like to assure residents that all standard checks and procedures for roles of this nature were followed in recruiting this individual.

“Mr Omotoye deliberately chose to apply for this role under a different name and failed to disclose his unspent criminal conviction at application or interview stage.

“An investigation was launched as soon as these facts came to light and we can confirm he is no longer a part of our organisation.”

During the court trial, the judge said the victim came to the UK on the false promise of financial reward and an education. But once in the country, under fake employer documents, she worked for "less than a pittance."

The judge told the wife: "You were domineering, bullying and intimidating. You tolerated no dissent. She was nothing but an animal to you."

He said that her husband must have been aware of the sham application and the trafficking of the victim.
