Action could finally be taking place on a road sign that has been plastered with a National Front symbol for more than a decade.

Labour councillor Steve Cox said he came across the graffiti in South Oxhey on November 4 while on a walk around his ward.

But a historical look back through Google Maps shows the graffiti has been in Prestwick Road for some time.

The graffiti spotted by Cllr Cox this month has been daubed in black on a white arrow and resembles the symbol of the National Front; a far-right political party in the UK.

Google Maps suggests the graffiti appeared between April 2018 and 2019.

Meanwhile on a sign at the same location in the opposite direction, the symbol has been there since at least 2008, in red, and although it was covered over in paint, that seems to have worn off and the graffiti has become visible again in recent years.

Cllr Cox said: "All graffiti is obnoxious but racist graffiti is particularly obnoxious. Racism in any form is wrong."

After being made aware the graffiti was not new, Cllr Cox said: "I am surprised I hadn't spotted it before. It is high time this was removed. For those who may have spotted it, I can reassure them we will get this offensive graffiti removed as soon as possible.

"Regrettably, we have also seen this before on a bollard in Prestwick Road some years ago. The National Front has no place in Three Rivers District."

Cllr Cox says he reported the existing graffiti to Hertfordshire County Council on the day he saw it and added he received an automated response the following day to tell him the site had been visited.

But Cllr Cox's colleague Cllr Stephen King said he drove by this morning and said the symbol had not yet been wiped away.

Earlier this year, South Oxhey Conservative county councillor Christopher Alley reported seeing the phrase 'White Pride' and the abbreviation 'BNP' daubed on walls, which he said believed stood for the far-right British National Party.

The walls are in a similar location to the National Front graffiti.

Cllr Cox said: "These incidents are concerning but I think it is the work of an individual. This doesn't represent South Oxhey at all."
