Drivers using the motorway network around Watford and surrounding areas are facing long-term disruption lasting up to 16 months due to a major programme of planned roadworks.

A notice from National Highways in this week’s edition of the Watford Observer details its intention to make an order for the phased overnight closure of sections of the M1, M25, roads linking both motorways and other major routes that may affect drivers in this area.

We previously reported the planned closures on the M1, affecting Junction 1 to Junction 5, on Wednesday, but the full package of works includes other major routes as well.

The order is due to take effect on December 4 and the works are due to begin on or after December 6, with the whole package expected to take approximately 16 months to complete.

The effect of the order would be to authorise the overnight closure, in phases, of:

  • The anti-clockwise carriageway of the M25 between Junction 18 (A404) and Junction 15 (M4 Junction 4B), and all of the slip and link roads leading to and from this length of carriageway.
  • Both carriageways of the M1 between Junction 1 (A406) and Junction 5 (A41/A406), and all the roads leading to and from these lengths of carriageway.
  • The link roads connecting from the southbound carriageway of the M1 to both carriageways of the M25 at Junction 6A (M25 Junction 21).
  • The road leading from the clockwise carriageway of the M25 at Junction 21A (A405).

Further afield, works are also due to be carried out on these routes during the specified period:

  • The entire circulatory carriageway (both directions) of Denham Roundabout (M40 Junction 1/A40/A412/A4020).
  • The London-bound carriageway of the A40 between M40 Junction 1 (A40/A412/A4020) and Swakeleys Roundabout (B467), all the roads leading to and from, and all the side roads at junction with this length of carriageway,

The programme of works are due to encompass resurfacing, bridge, drainage, street lighting, electrical, geotechnical and signage works and all associated maintenance.

The overnight closures are due to take place from (maximum periods) 10pm to 5.30am Mondays to Thursdays; 11pm to 6am on Fridays; 10pm to 6am on Saturdays; 10.30pm to 5.30am on Sundays.

The exception to this will be the M1 Junctions 1 to 5 closures which will take place between 9pm and 6am every day.

The temporary closures and diversion routes will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works period.
