An extensive programme of maintenance works on motorways near Watford may lead to disruption at certain times during next year.

A notice from National Highways in this week’s edition of the Watford Observer details plans for overnight closures affecting the M1, M25 and A505 and other restrictions that are due to be implemented while the works are carried out.

If the order is made, it will authorise the overnight closure in phases of:

  • Both carriageways of the M1 between Junction 1 (A406) and Junction 8 (A414)
  • Sections of both carriageways of the M25 between Junction 14 (A3113/Heathrow Spur Road) and Junction 26 (A121)
  • Both carriageways of the A405 between M1 Junction 6 and M25 Junction 21A roundabout
  • Any slip and link road leading to and from these lengths of carriageway
  • The entire circulatory system at M25 Junction 21A (A405), M25 Junction 23 (A1(M)/A1) and M25 Junction 25 (A10)

In addition, a mandatory overnight 50mph speed limit will be imposed on these lengths of carriageway, slip and link roads and roundabouts.

The measures are needed while contractors carry out “programmed cyclical maintenance” including bridge maintenance, drainage, lighting, inspections and surveys, litter picking and clearance and road markings amongst other works.

The notice states the duration of each closure will vary depending on the nature of the work being undertaken.

The overnight closures, due to begin on or after January 2, will be in operation between (maximum periods): 10pm to 5.30am on Mondays to Thursdays; 11pm to 6am on Fridays; 10pm to 6am on Saturdays; 10.30pm to 5.30am on Sundays.

The exception is the works on the M1 which will be from 9pm to 6am daily.

The notice adds that maintenance work would be scheduled to avoid disruption during “known peak periods”, although “essential work” may be necessary at these times to prevent the need for “emergency works”.
