Six low-cost houses have been built in Watford as part of plans for 56 affordable homes.

The Watford social rent programme is a joint effort between Watford Community Housing (WCH) and the council to provide low-cost and modern housing, typically around half the cost of renting an equivalent property on the private market.

Now the development of six spacious three-bedroom houses at Chesham Way, all with private gardens and off-street parking, has been completed.

The programme is eventually expected to bring a total of 56 homes for social rent across Watford.

In addition to £360,000 in government grant funding from Homes England, the council and WCH each contributed over £170,000 to the development.

Mayor Peter Taylor met with WCH’s chief executive, Tina Barnard, to mark the completion of the latest site.

At the event, the mayor explained that affordable housing is a “key priority” for him, adding that “without stable shelter, things can fall apart for people very quickly”.
