Plans that would see Hertfordshire's biggest nightclub replaced with 147 flats have been officially submitted.

Exactly a month ago, it was revealed popular Watford clubbing venue Pryzm is under threat from closure after the building's owners drew up plans to redevelop the site.

The proposal also includes the Iceland supermarket, car park and other venues within the premises.

The Observer has been told they would result in the closure of Pryzm and likely the other businesses too.

According to planning documents submitted by consultants Sphere 25, the plans would deliver a "high-quality" residential-led development of 147 flats of up to eight storeys.

There would also be some commercial and/or retail space which would include 51 parking spaces.

In March, a consultation was held on behalf of the applicants detailing the plans; however it only received 27 responses - the majority relating to concerns about losing the club.

Pryzm is Hertfordshire’s biggest nightspot with clubbers travelling from across the county and even London to visit.

It was formerly known as Oceana before being rebranded as Pryzm in 2016.

A spokesperson for Rekom UK, which owns Pryzm, told the Observer in March: "Pryzm is one of the most successful and long-lived clubs in the south of England.

"Formerly Top Rank, Baileys, Paradise Lost, Kudos, Destiny, Oceana and now PRYZM, it has entertained millions of visitors over 40 years and we hope that it will continue to do so for years to come.

"It plays a key part in feeding the success of other bars and restaurants in the town centre and in its own right employs over 100 staff."

They added: "The landlord is within its rights to explore alternative options for the site but we hope the people of Watford and the town planning department will see off attempts to remove the key attraction to the night-time economy, which attracts businesses, creates jobs and drives income, for yet another residential scheme."

The planning statement says that discussions about this proposal have been taking place with Watford Borough Council since May 2021 and that local councillors and residents have also been consulted about this scheme.

Comments can now be made on the council's planning portal about this proposal. The application reference number is 22/00506/FULM.
