A councillor says it was "absolute mayhem" as he watched several drivers illegally using a bus lane in a matter of minutes.

The prohibited route off Leggatts Way, near the A41, has become even more notorious in recent weeks after a man living nearby took the law into his own hands to stop drivers using the bus lane.

But there is little sign of the situation improving - in fact Leggatts ward councillor Asif Khan said what he saw yesterday morning (May 11) was the worst yet.

He shared a photo showing several cars in the bus lane with others attempting to get onto it.

He said: "It was dangerous, horrendous. There were some roadworks in the area but that's no excuse. Drivers need to be patient and follow the laws of the road.

"It was the worst I've seen. I was there for around 30 minutes and must have seen at least ten drivers use the bus lane. It was pandemonium, drivers beeping at each other, it was mayhem.

"I've escalated it with the police and county council and I have written to the Police and Crime Commissioner to say that enforcement and cameras are needed."

Only buses are allowed to use the route, which is a cut through from Leggatts Way to the roundabout where the A405 and A41 meet on the outskirts of North Watford.

Last week, the Observer reported that Paul Groves had started standing in the bus lane after growing frustrated by the issue.

Dressed in high-vis, Mr Groves, who has lived in the area for more than 20 years, has been verbally abused and even clipped with a wing mirror for blocking access to vehicles that are not buses.

He says he stopped after police told him he could be arrested for obstruction.

In an email sent to Neighbourhood Watch members, Hertfordshire Constabulary said its officers will be stopping vehicles passing through the Leavesden interchange bus route, following "complaints from residents".

Any vehicle seen by officers driving through the no entry sign will be reported for consideration to receive three points on their licence and a £100 fine.
