Do you remember?
On the left-hand wall of the arch going towards Chalk Hill, a big enamel sign.
“Drivers. Please slacken bearing rein before proceeding up the hill”.
At the time I was seven and had no idea what a bearing rein was. I was also a railway season ticket holder from Hatch End (for Pinner) to Bushey and Oxhey to attend Mr Sobey’s school at “Kingsfield”, on the Eastbury Road. After school we used to frequent the newsagents at the Arches where us underlings would buy sweets - and the older boys would study the top shelf material! Circa 1953.
