Some new developments are very much on the way to becoming a reality after planning permission was granted last month.

Varying types of schemes for housing and commercial use were given the green light, including in Watford, Garston, Bushey, and Rickmansworth.

We have rounded-up five of the biggest applications you may have missed.

Warehouse scheme to get bigger

We already knew a hotel on the A41 in Bushey will be getting knocked down and replaced by warehouses.

But the Mercure hotel site is now primed for around 30,000 square metres of logistics space, doubling the size of a scheme previously approved by Hertsmere Borough Council.

The expansion was slightly more controversial as it involves building over supposedly protected land but the majority of the council’s planning committee felt economic benefits outweighed the harm to green belt.

Factory site to become flats

One of the larger planning schemes in recent times to be approved in Watford is for 94 flats on the site of a factory in Rickmansworth Road.

Three blocks of up to five storeys will be constructed on the Fleet Laboratories site, with two commercial buildings demolished.

The plans are accompanied by a community garden, play area, 46 car parking spaces and 159 cycle spaces.

Waste site to receive shredder

A former coach depot on the A405 in Garston will be redeveloped to become an expansion of the existing Waterdale waste and recycling centre.

Brookdell Yard will be home to a new shredder which Hertfordshire County Council hopes will ease pressure on the existing and very busy tipping site.

Nearly 50 neighbours opposed the expansion saying they already suffer from noise and smell issues – but the council says it has plans to improve the situation and the shredding facility will help.

Family homes in Watford

Whenever a new home in the town is approved, it always seems to be a new flat.

But nine family houses in North Watford were recently given the green light by Watford Borough Council.

They will be built in Cherry Tree Road by the former Mothercare headquarters, which will also be undergoing major redevelopment for flats.

Some neighbours had claimed the new homes would be “out of place” and “overdevelopment”.

Second time lucky for care facility

A planning inspector gave the go-ahead for an assisted living care facility to be built in Rickmansworth town centre.

The scheme will see the 48-bedroom property built at Beeson’s Yard in Bury Lane.

Three Rivers District Council had rejected the plans because of its size but the inspector felt it would not result in an “unduly prominent form of development”.
