Bushey Mill Lane memorial bench installed for Spencer Bell

Spencer Bell, who lived in North Bushey, died on January 30, 2014.

He was tragically killed on the M1 after he stopped his car and ran to the aid of an individual who had jumped off a bridge onto the carriage way below.

The bench has been installed on the Green by the shops in Bushey Mill Lane with the inscription: 'In Loving memory of Spencer Bell - He gave his life helping another'.

Wendy Bell, Spencer’s widow, said: “I’m so grateful to councillor Laurence Brass and his Borough Council colleagues in North Bushey for ensuring that there is at last some recognition in our local community of my late husband’s sacrifice.”

Spencer had been a police officer for 31 years and had been chair of the Police Panel.

He was posthumously awarded both the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery and the Heroism Award from the Carnegie Hero Fund for his selfless act of bravery.

Cllr Brass who campaigned to have the bench installed said: “I was determined that Wendy’s wish should be granted, and Bushey should have a permanent reminder of her late husband’s bravery.”
