Social media was awash with excitement as six helicopters were seen flying across Watford.

Believed to be Chinooks, they were spotted by people in South Oxhey, Cassiobury Park and Chorleywood, yesterday (June 1) between 3pm and 4.30pm.

Dee Hoyte filmed the choppers from her home in Chorleywood yesterday (see the video below).

Amid speculation over what they were doing, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has since told the Watford Observer that the Royal Air Force (RAF) did not have any aircraft flying in the area yesterday (June 1).

However, it is believed the helicopters may have been United States Air Force aircraft. The US Embassy in London and the Department of Defense has been contacted for comment.

Numerous people took to social media to rave about the "amazing" sight, with one claiming they all landed at RAF Northolt.

"Chinooks - love the sound of them and all four all at once - super," another wrote.

It is not the first time the advanced multi-mission helicopters have been spotted in the area recently.

Last month a pair were seen over Bovingdon and there was a possibility Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was in one of them.

In June 2022, two were seen heading north-west over Cassiobury Park.

The Chinooks were on their way to a training exercise in East Anglia.

In 2021, paratroopers were seen leaping from a Chinook helicopter flying towards Merchant Taylor’s School in Moor Park, in what was believed to part of a MoD training exercise.
